Mining EVENTs
JACKLEG DRILLING
Contestants must have previous experience on a jackleg drill. JGRD will provide a jackleg drill for contestants to use.
The contest will be based on elapsed time to drill two (2) complete holes.
The driller will begin when the judge lowers his arm starting the timekeepers. The driller will be finished when the judge lowers his arm stopping the timekeepers
All holes drilled must be legal as defined below.
A legal hole:
Will be collared completely within the perimeter of the square.
Will be drilled to depth within the square.
Will not intersect another hole.
The judges will give signals or warnings to correct alignment problems, but the drillers will bear final responsibility for the alignment of their holes. The judges will give one warning if a hole is collared outside of the assigned square. A new hole must be collared, or the driller will be disqualified. The judges will also give one warning if a hole is leaving your square. If the hole is not corrected, the driller will be disqualified.
Any time one drill hole intersects another, indicated by the machine or flush water, both holes will be examined. If a driller has left his square, or intersects his hole, he will be disqualified. If a driller hits a hole from another square, there will be a mandatory redrill for the current driller. The driller whose hole left the assigned square will be disqualified. If a proper determination cannot be made, both parties will redrill.
Drillers will have two (2) minutes maximum to position their drill. The contest will start with the machine leaning against the block with the steel leaning no closer than 8” from the drill. The driller will not be in physical contact with the drill, steel, or hoses.
The judges will stop any drillers they deem unfit or unqualified to safely complete their holes.
OVERSHOT MUCKING
Contestants must have experience with a 12B mucker to participate. A judge will prequalify prospective contestants regarding the familiarity and safe handling of the 12B mucker. Those contestants deemed unqualified by the judge to run the mucker will not be allowed to compete in this event.
The contest will be based on elapsed time required to tram the machine to the muck pile, fill the car, and return the machine to the starting point. The mucker will be coupled to the car and will start with the air off.
A judge will declare when the car is full. The operator will have to cover a painted line in the car.
If the mucker or car derails, contestant will be disqualified.
The judges will stop any contestant they deem unfit or unqualified to safely complete the event.
HAND MUCKING
Shovels supplied by JGRD shall be used. There will be a variety of shovels to choose from. There will be a contest judge, timers, and a trimmer to spread shoveled muck in the ore car while contestants are competing.
The muck car will be a 1/2-ton end-dump with no more than an eight (8) cubic foot capacity. The car will be positioned with its wheels touching the bumper block on the opposite end of the track from the muck pile.
Contestants must not touch the car until the judge's signal.
At the judge's signal the contestant will push the ore car to the muck pile, and hand muck into the car. A trimmer will spread the muck in the car until the judge deems the car to be full. When the judge signals that the car is full the contestant will stop mucking and push the car back to the bumper block. Time will stop when the wheels of the car touch the bumper block.
Derailing the car during the cycle will disqualify the contestant
To keep the event moving along, each contestant will be allowed two (2) minutes to set up for their event. During this time, the contestant will be allowed to shape the muck pile to their satisfaction.
Contest winners and placings will be determined by the quickest times to complete.
Times will be tracked by stopwatch. If more than one stopwatch is used, then the average of times will be used.
TEAM DRILLING
Contestants must have previous experience on a jackleg drill. JGRD will provide a jackleg drill for contestants to use.
The contest will be based on elapsed time to drill two (2) complete holes.
There will be two (2) minutes total for set-up time.
The contest will start with the machine leaning against the block with the steel leaning no closer than 8” from the drill. The driller will not be in physical contact with the drill, steel, or hoses.
The contestant cannot touch the equipment until the judges start the time.
When the judge lowers his arm, the time starts.
The driller must chuck the steel and carry the machine to the face unassisted.
The driller must collar and drill one (1) hole within the dimensions of the square or circle.
The first driller may collar a second hole but drill it no deeper than the shoulder of the bit.
The first driller, upon completion of the hole, must then tag the second driller, who must be behind their starting line.
The second driller must drill the second hole until chuck tender touches the face of the 2x4 wood block.
All holes must be collared and drilled within the assigned square. All rates and procedures regarding legal holes for individual drilling will apply to team drilling.
The judges will stop any driller they deem unfit or unqualified to safely complete their holes.
SPIKE DRIVING
A standard mine axe will be used for spike driving. The contestant must use one of the axes provided by JGRD.
The contest will be based on total elapsed time to drive spikes completely into the timber stand.
The contestants will drive two (2) 60p spikes up, and three (3) 80p spikes down. The lower timber will be 24" off the floor, and the upper timber will be 66" off the floor. Timber shall be provided for a contestant to stand on if the contestant desires but setting up this timber will be included in the elapsed time.
All spikes must be driven until the heads are flush to the surface of timber. A ten (10) second penalty will be assessed for any spike that is not flush with the timber but is driven to a point where the bottom of the head is touching the timber. The contestant will also be disqualified if the spike exits the timber. A bent spike may be straightened and driven in.
The contestant will be given five (5) spikes prior to the start of the contest. The contest will begin with the contestant at the starting line with the axe and nails. The judge will give the start signal. The contest will end when the fifth spike is driven, and the contestant runs back to the start/finish line. Spikes must be driven individually, and into the designated squares.

AXE THROWING
The official axe for this event is a Tuatahi "Competition" throwing axe with a 2 1/2-pound head and a 27-inch handle. An axe will be provided for contestants who don't have their own axe. Contestants providing their own axe must comply with the axe specifications of the official axe being used.
Contestants must not step over the line until the axe hits the target.
Contestants will retrieve their own axe after each throw.
Contestants are allowed one (1) practice throw if they want one. Contestants must request the practice throw prior to their first throw or the first throw will count for points.
The target is approximately 36 inches in diameter. The distance to the target is 20 feet. The bullseye of the target is approximately 60 inches above the ground.
Each contestant will get three (3) throws for points. A bullseye is scored as five (5) points, and each succeeding ring is scored 4, 3, 2, and 1 point, respectively. A complete miss of the target is scored as a zero (0). If both tips of the axe stick, zero (0) points will be awarded for that throw. The leading edge of the axe only will be counted for points.
The contestant with the most total points will be declared the winner. In the event of a tie, a single throw throw-off will be held until a winner is declared.
HORIZONTAL CHOPPING
In the interest of safety, all contestants will be required to wear provided foot and leg protectors. The official axe for this event is a Tuatahi "Competition" chopping axe. An axe will be provided for contestants who don't have their own axe. Contestants providing their own axe must comply with the axe specifications of the official axe being used.
The contestant must stand on the platform while chopping.
Time starts when the axe hits the wood and stops when the cut is completed and log separates.
The log must be chopped from two (2) sides. The cut must be completely severed, or a penalty of no time will result.
The logs to be chopped are 6–7-inch peeled alder logs.
TEAM HAND BUCKING
Safety chaps must be worn during this event and will be provided. A crosscut saw will be provided for this event.
Two contestants on a saw.
The log will be a spruce, hemlock, alder, or cottonwood log with a minimum diameter of 16 inches.
Time will start on the judge's signal and stop when the log is completely severed, and the disc touches the ground. A full disc must be cut. Any cuts through the face of the disc will result in disqualification.
Slabs more than 1/2 inch in thickness must be cut clean of the log.
OBSTACLE POLE BUCKING
Safety chaps, eye protection, and hearing protection shall be worn during the event. Chaps and eye/hearing protection will be furnished. Only stock saws will be allowed. JGRD will provide saws and fuel for this event.
Contestants will start with their saw running on the ground and have chain brake engaged.
At the judge’s signal, contestants must run from the starting line to the base of the log, pick up their saw, and proceed to the far end along the top of the log. They will then perform one match cut by starting a downward cut from the top side of the log, switching sides, and completing the same cut upward from the bottom to produce a full disc. Contestants must engage the chain brake before returning down the log and running back to the starting line.
Contestants may turn off their saw at any time while proceeding back down the log and running back to the starting line.
Time stops when the contestant returns to the starting line.
Not making the cut from both sides, falling off the log, and/or cutting through the face of the disc will result in disqualification.
LOG ROLLING
Log will be positioned and steadied in center of pond.
Contestants will "mount" log from each end and the log is released.
The contestant that stays on the log for the longest time will be declared the winner of that round.
Each round will produce a winner, with losers being eliminated from further competition.
The final two rounds will determine first, second, and third place.
VERTICAL CHOPPING
The official axe for this event is a Tuatahi "Competition" chopping axe. An axe will be provided for contestants who don't have their own axe. Contestants providing their own axe must comply with the axe specifications of the official axe being used.
The time will start when the axe hits wood and stop when the cut hits the ground.
The log must be chopped from two (2) sides. The cut must be completely severed, or a penalty of no time will result.
The logs to be chopped are 6–7-inch peeled alder logs.
STOCK POWER BUCKING
Safety chaps and eye/hearing protection must be worn and will be furnished. Only stock saws will be allowed. JGRD will provide saws and fuel/bar oil for this event.
Each contestant will perform one match cut: starting with a downward cut from the top of the log, then switching sides to complete the same cut upward from the bottom, producing a single disc from a spruce or hemlock log with a minimum diameter of 24 inches.
The bar is not to exceed 36 inches in length. A six (6) cubic inch limitation will be placed on power saws used by contestants. This limitation allows for the use of a saw no larger than a Stihl 066, Husqvarna 394, or equivalent.
The time starts when the saw touches the wood and stops when the log is completely severed, and the disc touches the ground.
A full disc must be cut. Any cuts through the face of the disc will result in disqualification.
SPEED CLIMBING
Contestants can provide their own climbing rigging for this event if all requirements are met. JGRD will provide climbing gear if contestant doesn’t possess any. Contestants must be belayed. Separate belayers will manage the rope to maintain tension and quickly catch the climber if they fall. Conventional climbing rigging must be used. Toe spurs are not allowed.
Time starts at the judge's signal and stops when the climber crosses the painted line.
One foot must be touching the ground when time starts.
A showy, but safe, descent is requested.
Women’s Speed Climbing has the same rules as Men's Speed Climbing, except the distance will be twenty-five feet (25) and a safety rope will be attached to the contestant.
CHOKER SETTER RACE
Protective gear including gloves, eye protection, and appropriate footwear must be worn. Hearing protection is not required for this event. Chokers will be provided for this event.
This is an individual timed event.
At the judge’s signal, the contestant will leave the starting line carrying a lightweight choker.
The contestant must run to the obstacle area where a smaller log is positioned next to the main log. The contestant must then get over the main log, which is approximately 5–6 feet in diameter. The obstacle log may be used for assistance but is not required.
Once over the main log, the contestant must throw the choker under it, get back over the log, and properly set the choker by attaching the knob to the bell. The contestant will then sprint to the finish line.
An improperly secured choker that becomes dislodged during the event will result in disqualification.
